CHILD AND ADOLESCENT
The Child and Adolescent unit of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Benin City was established on the 27th of June 1998. The project was conceived and donated by the Rotary club of Uselu, who realized the absence of facility to cater for the needs of the children and adolescents with mental health problems. This unit provides a full complement of multidisciplinary care team inclusive of; Consultant Child/Adolescent Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurses, Child Psychologist, Occupational Therapist/speech therapists, Social Workers and Community Health Nurses.
1. Child and adolescent outpatient care unit (Tuesdays and Fridays every week from 9am - 3.30pm). 2. Community and school outreach programs. 3. Free medical services for the patients caregivers: including Psycho-education and supportive counseling. 4. General hospital liason services: for medically ill children who have mental disorder. 5. Child and adolescent emergency mental health services: These services are available 24 Hours a day and every day of the week. 6. Short term in patient care for observation for severely or acutely disturbed patients 7. Skill assessment and training: Provided by the occupational therapy section of the C/A unit, 3 to 4 times a week. Other services provided by the occupational therapy section of the unit include: speech therapy, physiotherapy, and special education. 8. Psychological assessments and therapies, such as IQ assessments, and psychotherapies. 9. Weekly continuing education programs: for the staffs, to improve service delivery. 10. Social workers home environment/family assessment and therapy as often required by some patients. 11. Day hospital/day care services: This service is available for disturbed patients, who need to be observed and who have medication adherence problems (to cater for some disturbed children whose care-giver cannot afford admission).
